Medical Insurance Information

Cathay Medical Insurance (First 6 Months)
Students who have just arrived in Taiwan are not eligible to apply for National Health Insurance (NHI) immediately. You are required to join Cathay Insurance for your first six months in Taiwan.

With Cathay Insurance, you must pay the full medical fee by yourself at the clinic or hospital first, and then apply for reimbursement. The coverage and reimbursement limits are as follows:

Clinic Visits
Maximum reimbursement of NT$1,000 per day/visit.
Hospitalization (Daily)
Maximum reimbursement of NT$1,000 per day.
Hospitalization (Total Cap)
Total payment of benefits shall not exceed NT$120,000 per hospitalization.

National Health Insurance (NHI)

To enroll in the National Health Insurance (NHI), you must establish a continuous residence in Taiwan for more than six months from your initial arrival date. During this six-month period, you are permitted to travel abroad only once, and the trip must last less than 30 days. If you travel abroad for more than 30 days or more than twice, your eligibility date will be recounted.

Standard Base Case:
First Arrival in Taiwan: Sept. 10 → Stay continuously for 6 months → NHI Enrollment Date: Mar. 10.
*You must use Cathay Insurance from Sept. 10 to Mar. 9.
Example 1: Short Trip Abroad (< 30 Days)
If you travel abroad for 5 days during the initial 6 months, your enrollment date will simply be postponed by those 5 days.
New NHI Date: Mar. 15 (Mar. 10 + 5 days)
*Cathay Insurance coverage period: Sept. 10 to Mar. 14.
Example 2: Trip Abroad Exceeding 30 Days (Recounted)
If you travel abroad for 30 days (e.g., from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30), your continuous residence status is interrupted and the 6-month period recounts from your re-entry date.
New NHI Date: May 30 (Nov. 30 re-entry + 6 months continuous stay)
*Cathay Insurance coverage period: Sept. 10 to May 29.
Example 3: Multiple Trips Abroad (Recounted)
If you travel abroad more than once (e.g., 6 days from Oct. 1 to Oct. 6, and again from Dec. 15 to Dec. 25), the 6-month period restarts from your latest re-entry date.
New NHI Date: Jun. 25 (Dec. 25 latest re-entry + 6 months continuous stay)
*Cathay Insurance coverage period: Sept. 10 to Jun. 24.
NCU Student Group Insurance
Eligibility
Every registered student enrolled at NCU, including exchange students and interns.
Coverage & Limitations
Covers injuries due to unexpected accidents, illness, and disablement.
CRITICAL NOTE: This insurance is strictly for patients who require hospitalization. Outpatient clinic visits are completely excluded.
Required Documents for Reimbursement:
1. Original Hospital Receipt
2. Official Medical Certificate (from hospital)
